A LIKENESS WITH A PRESENCE
When you commission a portrait from Linda Sheppard, you can take pride in knowing
that you are placing your portrait requirements in the hands of an experienced professional artist.
THE VALUE OF A PAINTED PORTRAIT
•        It is an interpretation of one’s own being filtered through the eyes of the artist who
takes the time to deeply observe and communicate with the subject.
•        It affirms the precious value of the sitter that says, “You are of incredible worth”.
•        It confirms the benefactor’s desire to never let this person be forgotten.
•        It captures the loved one for a moment in time.
•        It captures the strength or characteristics of the person that will speak to future
generations.  This has ties to historical or family continuity.
•        An artist’s perception of a person does not have to portray all the flaws, as happens in
photographs, unless they are central to the character of the person.
•        To live with good art is to be changed. Art is unpredictable. It may draw you in to the
scene or the person and speak.  You may notice something you had missed, or you may be
reminded of times you have forgotten.  It may stir your imagination or lift you above the
ordinary.
•        A painted portrait is a small price to pay for a place in living history.

When you decide to commission a portrait, the artist will work with you to develop a process
that fits your schedule, while allowing her to get the information she needs about the subject.
This process usually includes:
1.        A telephone conversation or meeting to discuss ideas for the portrait, setting,
background, clothes, etc.
2.        If the client already has professional photos of the subject, the artist may be able to
work from those photos.  Otherwise, you will schedule a session in her studio or your home
or office with a photographer.  The client pays for the photographer at this time and will get
the photos when the painting is completed.  If the client lives out of the artist’s local area, she
would have to travel at least once to meet the subject and have a photography session, with
all expenses paid by the client.
3.        A discussion of the photos, composition, etc.
4.        A drawing is presented for approval.
5.        A preliminary portrait is developed from the photographs.
6.        If possible, subject will sit for 1-3 hours so she can check the values and correct the
skin color.
7.        Painting is presented for approval.
